There has been much adverse publicity about Local Authorities deciding to switch off street lights due to expenditure cutbacks, particularly following last October’s Chancellor’s Spending Review. The system has proved to be a popular, sensible and safe option for councils trying to reduce their carbon footprint whilst ensuring there is adequate lighting on roads and public areas.

Each individual street light can now, for the first time ever, be securely managed over the Internet with appropriate lighting levels set for specific times of day. However, should lighting levels need to be increased, this can be done in an instant, through the use of the solution’s Central Management System (CMS), which remotely and pro-actively manages the output of each individual street light.

LeafNut will also help ensure Local Councils are well placed to meet government carbon reduction targets as the system will reduce carbon emissions by as much as 100kg of carbon per year, for every street light - the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency states that Councils need to reduce their carbon emissions by 34% by 2020, based on 1990 levels, or they will have to pay tax credits to central government.

The innovative system has already been deployed by over 40 Local Authorities worldwide, including most recently across Surrey County Council’s, which will deploy the solution across its entire stock of 89,000 street lights.

Surrey County Council leader, Dr. Andrew Povey, said, “This will be the largest scale introduction of this type of street lighting technology in Britain.” Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Transport, Ian Lake, also commented, “The new technology is a lot more energy efficient than our current street lights, leading to both financial and energy savings, which are good for the pocket and the environment.”

The Queen’s Award marks a period of real growth and success at Harvard, who also develop innovative and efficient lighting solutions for commercial, retail and emergency applications. At a difficult economic time, Harvard’s success is a refreshing story of British Manufacturing at its best. With significant growth over the last two years, Harvard employee numbers have doubled from 100 to over 200. The savings are achieved by using modern electronics to replace old inefficient systems in the lamp head. These are connected to groundbreaking wireless technology providing remote control to individual or groups of lights.

The system manages the light output, allowing the dimming of the lights to match the specific requirements of a location at different times of night. This saves electricity and cuts costs, whilst also reducing carbon consumption and light pollution.

Lighting levels on the A167 are reduced during times of very low traffic volumes, whilst areas leading on to the A167 will remain unchanged. Even then, such is the flexibility of the system that at the press of a button the lighting can be brought back to full intensity. This safety aspect can also be maintained in conjunction with CCTV monitoring systems.

Wilf Newall, street lighting manager, at Durham County Council commented, “With the introduction of the CRC and the continued volatility in energy prices, it is becoming increasingly important to identify ways of reducing the amount of electricity used. Street lighting is one of the Council’s biggest energy costs. Some local authorities have made the decision to switch off street lights, in Durham we are looking to technology to help us achieve savings and reduce carbon emissions. The LeafNut system allows us to do this by reducing light levels at particular times, rather than completely switching lights off.”

As well as cutting costs, the system will provide a significant contribution towards the local authority’s targets for reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Change Act has set legally-binding targets for an 80% reduction in these emissions by 2050.

Harvard Engineering started development work on their LeafNut system over 6 years ago. It won for the company, the prestigious Lighting Design Award for light sources and control gear where judges commented “It will revolutionise the street lighting industry because the system can cut energy consumption by 40% and carbon production and toxic waste by 50% across the whole street lighting infrastructure.” The LeafNut system can assist in providing a significant contribution to achieving targets for carbon emission savings.

Harvard Website

The new look Harvard Website has now been launched and along with the new looks are a host of new features including:

Twitter News Feed.
